Week 13 Discussion Board Worlds of Art

Q Artists Jeffrey Veregge and Wangechi Mutu build on themes of continuity and innovation in contemporay art. Ideas presented in Chapter 9 can inform our thinking about what it means to carry traditional aesthetic practices into the artistic discourse of the here and now. Please read both articles thoroughly. You are encouraged to find additional resources on the artists to support your ideas in responding to the following prompts. 1. Using your formal analysis skills, please identify and discuss how each artist employs specific elements from their culture of origin. What do you think about hybridization and how the creative output of each artist meshes with forms from other traditions (example superhero figures and caryatids). Do you think their choices should be considered cultural appropriation? Why or why not? 2. The artists are working in two different realms of production and are at differing points in their careers. Veregge is concerned with design and his practice could be considered more commercial, while Mutu is an internationally successful art star who is enjoying a major moment in the highest levels of the fine art world. Based on what you've learned this semester, which artist interests you the most and why?

Art is a platform that allows for experiments along with offering an opportunity to retell a long-forgotten story or a story that needs a voice. If there is an opportunity to combine tradition and modernism, it will only allow for a diversified canvas offering multiple perspectives. Veregee combined his culture and his talent, creating something both beautiful and unique what he created should not be considered as a cultural appropriation because it does not attempt to mimic the original work, and yet makes something new and worth appreciation.
